We Republicans have historically voted on election day. Over the past several elections, however, early and absentee voting has increased significantly, both in our county and countrywide. In fact, the Presidential election in Iowa in 2008 was actually won by Republicans, based on election day voting. Unfortunately, we lost overall due to a significant advantage that the Democrats built through early and absentee voting. There is no question that voting on election day is something we hold dear as one of our greatest rights and freedoms. There is also no doubt that absentee voting costs more to our counties and states than does voting on election day. The problem is that we have fallen behind the Democrats when it comes to the important psychological element of momentum, which impacts independent voter turnout and decision.
